A village classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France
If Ars-en-Ré is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", it is not for nothing. With its picturesque cobbled streets, its white houses with green shutters and its alleys full of hollyhocks, acanthus and lavender, Ars-en-Ré is sure to appeal to lovers of the Ile de Ré.
A visit to the village of Ars-en-Ré allows you to admire a rich historical heritage such as the Romanesque and Gothic church. Built in the 7th century, the church of Saint-Étienne d'Ars-en-Ré is known for its belfry topped by a black and white bell tower. At 40 m high, it still serves as a landmark and guides the boats towards the entrance of the bay of Ars.
You should also discover the Sénéchal's house, a Renaissance dwelling with watchtowers decorated with sculptures dating from the 16th century.
Further on, the visitor will discover the former station of the little train of the island (1898) and the salt refinery created in 1817 by the merchant Benjamin Dubois-Fontaine, today registered as a historical monument. The Martray redoubt, also called the Martray fort, is also worth a visit. This military fort was built in 1674 at the narrowest point on the island of Ré, an isthmus only a few dozen metres wide.
And if you like (top) secret places, head for the Ars-en-Ré forest, where the Karola battery is hidden, the last remnant of an important command post of the Atlantic Wall built by the Germans during the Second World War. The 23-metre high fire direction tower still stands today.
Beach, sailing and water activities in Ars-en-Ré
La Grange beach is the only official beach in Ars en Ré. This small family sandy beach is only accessible at high tide. A little further on, the Martray beach and the Marielle beach are better known to those who like to fish on foot. To the south of Ars-en-Ré, the Pointe de Grignon attracts surfers and sunset lovers. A short distance from the village centre, the Cercle Nautique d'Ars-en-Ré (C.N.A.R.) organises sailing courses on optimists, catamarans and windsurfing, as well as kitesurfing and wingfoil sessions. The proud bay of Ars extends over 800 hectares and offers a privileged stretch of water for sailing and boating enthusiasts.
The port of Ars-en-Ré
The port of Ars-en-Ré is the most important marina on the island of Ré, with 550 moorings spread over two basins: La Prée, known as the "village port", and La Criée, known as the "natural port". Every morning in the summer, Ars-en-Ré has a market which showcases local produce, with more than 150 traders unpacking their stalls around the port.
