A village that invites seRÉnity
Land of vineyards, dunes and salt marshes, La Couarde sur Mer is a small village anchored in the middle of the Ile de Ré, between Le Bois-Plage and Ars-en-Ré. Located 10 km from the campsite Le Camp du Soleil, this former hamlet of wine growers, fishermen and salt marshes has become a particularly touristy village, which has lost none of its authenticity and history. With its 1,200 inhabitants, La Couarde comes alive around its neo-Gothic church, built in 1865 on the site of an older building. The new church has inherited the altars, the baptismal font, the statues and the ex-voto from the old sanctuary. The last bandstand on the island, which stands against the church, adds to the charm of the village. In summer, concerts are held here. The village is home to other vestiges of the past, more or less hidden, in the narrow streets and flowery alleys that cross the old town. Numerous sundials, painted or engraved in stone, some dating from 1779, adorn the walls of the village. It's up to you to find them!
From the very famous Prises beach to the Follies beach, via the Peu Ragot beach, La Couarde is fringed by a long ribbon of sand of more than 5 kilometres, nestling behind the dunes. In addition to swimming, you can enjoy sailing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling and surfing. La Pergola beach is one of the most famous spots on the island.
Ideas for walks
La Couarde sur Mer can also be discovered on foot or by bike. The cycle tracks and hiking trails offer beautiful walks in the heart of nature, vineyards, salt marshes and forest. A coastal path has been laid out along the dune. It allows you to walk along the immense beach of La Couarde, offering beautiful views of the Pertuis d'Antioche. A stone's throw from the Prises beach, the Bois Henri IV offers a haven of peace and freshness, in the middle of hundred-year-old holm oaks. Lost in the salt marshes to the north of La Couarde, the port of Goisil is the starting point for a picturesque and bucolic stroll along the channel. While strolling along the Fosse-de-Loix and the Anse du Martray, you can meet the oyster farmers of La Couarde. This is an opportunity to stop off in the oyster huts to taste the excellent oysters of the Ile de Ré!
