A historical and tourist visit not to be missed, 15 km from your campsite on the Ile de Ré!

The historic capital of the Ile de Ré

Fortified by Vauban, Saint Martin de Ré is home to a rich architectural heritage, witness to a history engraved in stone. Starting with the citadel and ramparts built in the 17th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. The city could shelter the entire population of the island in case of an attack. Work on the fortifications began in 1681. In 1873, the citadel became a place of transit - for convicts sentenced to the penal colony on their way to New Caledonia and Guyana.

The fortified church of Saint-Martin is also a landmark. The observatory bell tower offers one of the most beautiful views of the island of Ré. The Ernest-Cognacq Museum - Musée d'art et d'histoire de l'île de Ré - is housed in the Hôtel de Clerjotte, a beautiful Renaissance-style building, and immerses visitors in the historical and artistic past of Saint Martin de Ré.

Your camping holiday near Saint Martin de Ré will also be an opportunity to linger in the narrow streets of the village surrounded by medieval timber-framed buildings, such as the Maison de la Vinatrie (17th century). A few steps away, you will find the Hôtel des Cadets Gentilshommes (now the Hôtel de Ville) and the apothecary and its former military hospital, built in the 17th century to treat soldiers stationed on the island of Ré.

The port of Saint Martin de Ré

The port of Saint Martin is the largest marina on the island, along with that of Ars-en-Ré. You can meet walkers, boaters and some fishermen who come to sell their catch on the quays. Near the port and the pier for Fort Boyard, donkeys in knickers (the mascots of the island of Ré!) await your children in the Parc de la Barbette for an unusual walk along the ramparts.
